Volunteer

Better Basics is built on volunteers. Our founder, John Glasser, was a retired FBI agent who wanted to help children learn to read. He, his wife, and a couple of friends volunteered at a local Birmingham City School in East Lake in 1992 and from that experience, Better Basics was born in 1993.

We have volunteers in many of our programs. These volunteers help students develop fundamental skills. They also bond with the children, encouraging them to elevate and rise to their full ability. They share information about their hobbies, work, college, pets, children, families, jobs, and interests.

Better Basics has volunteers of all ages. Some as young as 7, and some as old as 95. Our volunteers come from all different types of backgrounds, all making impactful memories with local students.

Below is more about our different volunteer-based programs.
