Volunteer with Better Basics

On-site volunteers help students develop fundamental skills. They also bond with the children, encouraging them to elevate and rise to their full ability. Project-based volunteers provide support in our office by prepping materials for students and events. Our volunteers come from all different types of backgrounds, all making impactful memories with local students.

Volunteer-based Program Overviews

Academic Tutoring

Academic Tutoring volunteers deliver one-on-one tutoring to early-elementary students. Tutors target students’ greatest skill deficits. Academic Tutoring expects to improve reading fluency by 40%.

Reading Mentors

Elementary students whose skill levels are too low to qualify for Reading Intervention are partnered with trained volunteers to develop foundational reading skills. Our goal is for students to reach the 25th percentile in state testing and improve reading fluency by at least 20%.

Wise Words

Wise Words uses trained volunteers to read to an entire first-grade class. The Wise Words program increases vocabulary and reading engagement while inspiring children to read for pleasure.

Better Basics Reads

Hundreds of volunteers are mobilized on a single day to read aloud to students in every Pre-K through 5th-grade classroom in each school system we serve. These events are held in the Spring.
