Better Basics is excited to team up with The Literacy Council, The Junior League of Birmingham and the Children’s Literacy Guild of Alabama for Birmingham Reads, a city-wide celebration of reading. Birmingham Reads is a spring event comprised of two components:  reading to elementary school age children and collecting books for a book drive.

During Birmingham Reads, every elementary school classroom in the Birmingham City School system will be read a story by community volunteers.  This exciting event will take place on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Each student will also receive a book to take home! During this event, we will read to 700 classrooms and distribute books to almost 14,000 students within a two hour period. Your participation will make a difference in a child's life by helping to foster the love of reading.

Birmingham’s Biggest Book Drive will run from April 1-15, 2010.  During this time, we will be collecting new or gently-used books that can be brought to any of our drop-off locations.  Currently, the drop off sites for Birmingham’s Biggest Book Drive is any Birmingham area Books-A-Million, Zoe’s Kitchen or Winn Dixie locations.  If you would like to organize a book drive during Birmingham’s Biggest Book Drive, download the Book Drive Handbook for instructions and helpful information.

You can also make a donation to Birmingham Reads through PayPal to help provide books for this exciting event.  To make a donation through PayPal, click on the button at the top of the Contributions page and designate Birmingham Reads in the “note” area.   If you are interested in reading to children during Birmingham Reads, organizing a book drive, or have any questions, please contact Lauri Rogers at volcoord@betterbasics.org.
