Birmingham Reads: Will You Join Us?
Better Basics is excited to team up with The Literacy Council, The Junior League of Birmingham and
the Children’s Literacy Guild of Alabama for Birmingham Reads, a city-wide celebration
of reading. Birmingham Reads is a spring event comprised of two components: reading to
elementary school age children and collecting books for a book drive.
During Birmingham Reads, every
elementary school classroom in the Birmingham City School system will be read a story by community volunteers.
This exciting event will take place on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, from 12:30 to 2:30
p.m. Each student will also receive a book to take home! During this event, we will read to 700
classrooms and distribute books to almost 14,000 students within a two hour period. Your participation
will make a difference in a child's life by helping to foster the love of reading.
Birmingham’s
Biggest Book Drive will run from April 1-15, 2010.
During this time, we will be collecting new or gently-used books that can be brought to any of our drop-off locations.
Currently, the drop off sites for Birmingham’s Biggest Book Drive is any Birmingham area Books-A-Million,
Zoe’s Kitchen or Winn Dixie locations. If you
would like to organize a book drive during Birmingham’s Biggest Book Drive, download the Book Drive
Handbook for instructions and helpful information.
You can also make a donation to Birmingham Reads through PayPal to help provide books for this
exciting event. To make a donation through PayPal, click on the button at the top of the Contributions
