Volunteer Opportunities

Our goal is to Change a Child’s Future. We accomplish this one volunteer at a time. Our volunteers are students, professionals, homemakers and retired individuals looking to make a difference in the life of children and our community.

We need:

Library Assistant:

Hours: June-August, Monday through Thursday, 9:00-4:00 (minimum 3 hour commitment).
Age minimum:  16 years old. Groups of more than 3 youth must bring an adult chaperone. Bring your own lunch and drinks.
No more than 3 volunteers per day (plus chaperone). 
  • Help inventory, clean, repair and replenish reading program libraries.
  • Copy book reports.  Replenish reports as needed.
  • Create book inventory sheets.
  • Assemble prize book bags. 
Enrichment Assistant: 
  
Hours: June-August, Monday through Thursday, 9:00-4:00 (minimum 3 hour commitment).
Age minimum:  14 years old. Groups of more than 3 youth must bring an adult chaperone. Bring your own lunch and drinks.
No more than 4 volunteers per day. 
  • Clean plastic bins.
  • Print, laminate, cut and group bookmarks.
  • Print and assemble volunteer nametags.
  • Assemble teacher’s gifts. 
HOPE Center Camp Counselor: 
  
Hours:  June from 1:00 until 4:00 (Monday through Thursday).  July from 10:00 until 4:00 (Monday through Thursday) - (minimum 4 hour commitment).
Background check required.
Age minimum:  16 years old. Groups of more than 5 youth must bring an adult chaperone. Bring your own lunch and drinks.
No more than 5 volunteers per day (plus chaperone). 
  • Help insure the campers are safe, are learning and having a good time.
  • Assist with stations such as art, exercise, music, etc.
  • Provide an extra set of hands wherever needed.

Reading Intervention Weekly Volunteers 

  • Tutor 1st- through 5th-grade children to improve specific reading skills
  • Approximately 45 minutes once a week from October - April
  • One hour of training and all materials furnished by Better Basics

MORE Weekly Volunteers

  • Visit a 4th grade classroom once a week to encourage reading for pleasure (approximately 1 hour)
  • Grade short-answer book reports once a week (a key is furnished)
  • Award prize books to children weekly for every book read
  • Give children incentive prizes for meeting reading goals
  • One hour of training and all materials and prizes furnished by Better Basics

Ready 2 Read Monthly Volunteers

  • Visit the classroom twice a month to encourage reading for pleasure (approximately 30 minutes)
  • Read a book to the class
  • Take Ready 2 Read library to a 2nd grade classroom in September to kick-off the program and bring back to Better Basics office in April.
  • One hour of training and all materials furnished by Better Basics

Other Ways to Support Better Basics

  • Volunteer at the office
  • Summer volunteers are needed to help manage the supplies and materials that must be inventoried, cleaned and restocked for the next school year.
  • Organize a book drive (Better Basics Book Drive Kit is available)
