Reading Intervention targets students in elementary schools who are below grade level in reading and require intervention in order to become proficient readers.  Students are selected to participate through teacher recommendations and test scores.  They are placed with an intervention teacher employed by Better Basics who works with the students in a small group format three times a week for 20 weeks.  Students working with the intervention teacher focus on the five most effective components of reading instruction, according to current research and practice.  These five are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Writing skills are also emphasized.  The intervention teachers are trained to meet the child's individual needs in these areas.  Other qualifying students are placed wtih trained volunteers who work with students once a week and focus primarily in the areas of reading fluency and comprehension.
